Researching Learning Experiences of LTC Workers

Training providers require research into the experiences of Irish healthcare workers with various teaching and learning modalities of CPD (Continuing Professional Development) in the LTC (Long-Term Care) setting to develop successful and effective new programmes for the sector. For this reason, LHP Skillnet commissioned the European Centre of Excellence for Research in Continuing Professional Development, which is based in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI), to conduct a comprehensive study on the topic.

The aim of the study was to examine the experiences of healthcare professionals and managers with face-to-face, online asynchronous (pre-recorded), and online synchronous (live) modalities for CPD, all within the LTC sector in the Republic of Ireland.

Key Conclusions

The study found that asynchronous online learning, though convenient, lacked engagement and practical skill development. Synchronous online teaching on the other hand, offering interactivity and immediate feedback, was well-received. Participants favoured face-to-face sessions especially for building relationships and effective skill acquisition. Furthermore, they appreciated a blend of online and in-person learning for its flexibility. Overall, engagement emerged as a critical factor in CPD success, achievable through skilled educators, peer interaction, and flexible learning options.

Workplace support is essential for implementing new knowledge and skills. Addressing complex care needs in LTC is vital, emphasizing specialized training in geriatric care. Decision-makers can use these findings to enhance teaching and learning in LTC, capitalizing on technology for varied, context-tailored learning experiences. Ultimately, this research seeks to optimise CPD for LTC workers, fostering engagement and addressing the evolving needs of the sector.
