LHP Skillnet are delighted to announce the launch of our new course: Infection Prevention and Control in Long-Term Residential Care Settings starting this September.

Background

LHP Skillnet commissioned the RCSI Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery to develop this programme specifically for nurses working within Long-Term Residential Care Facilities (LTRCF). The aim is to support nurses with continued professional development (CPD) in Infection Prevention and Control by presenting the regulations, standards and guidance in IPC, applicable to LTRCFs with insights from experts within the sector. The programme was designed to be as flexible as possible, as we are mindful of the demands on nurses’ time and availability for ongoing CPD.

How does this differ from the IPC Link Practitioner Programme?

The Link Practitioner programme is a standardized education programme that is recognised as a role within the Community Healthcare Organisations. This programme is usually completed by one or two of your senior nursing team with the nursing home. The Link Practitioner programme covers the core principles of IPC and covers hand hygiene train-the-trainer.

Link Practitioner Programme

  • Standardized Education Programme
  • Completed by one or two Senior Nurses
  • IPC Core Principles & Hand Hygiene Train-the-Trainer

Our Programme

  • Covers All IPC Core Principles
  • Central Repository with All Available Resources

  • Self-Paced Programme Offering Full Flexibility
  • Delivered by IPC Experts within the LTC Sector
  • Focuses on Regulation 27 of the Health Act 2007
  • Suitable for All Your Nurses
  • Includes Live Virtual Workshops & Masterclasses

LHP Skillnet’s new IPC in Long-Term Residential Care Settings programme covers all the core principles of IPC. It further contains a repository of all available resources in the one location and allows for full flexibility to work through the content at your own pace, in your own time.

Our programme was designed specifically for nurses working in the residential care sector, and its content is delivered by experts within the long-term care sector and infection prevention control experts. It also focuses on achieving compliance with Regulation 27 of the Health Act 2007.

This is the type of programme I would put all my nurses on if I was a PIC. Being able to access the resources all in one place and being part of a peer learning community that shares knowledge of their experiences managing and implementing IPC is so valuable.
   — Margaret Wafer, Clinical & Quality Lead with Céile Care

Margaret Wafer is a member of LHP Skillnet's Board of Directors.

This new course is suitable for all nurses working within the nursing home and includes live virtual workshops to support engagement with the content covered and to get an opportunity to share knowledge with peers from other nursing homes.

Those that complete the programme can also attend our IPC Masterclasses (2 are included with the programme) that will be delivered at intervals throughout the year. This will allow nurses the opportunity to review current and relevant IPC topics utilizing an engaging approach with the support of an expert in the area to continue professional development in IPC.

Delivery

Our IPC in Long-Term Residential Care Settings programme is delivered through blended learning with resources, activities and videos available on the different themes for you to work through at your own pace, on our virtual learning Moodle platform.

You must also attend a live virtual session to participate in group work and engage in peer learning. The dates of the live sessions will be given to you when you enrol on the course. You will have access to the course for 8 weeks in which you can complete the content at your own pace and utilise the resources within the course.

Once you have completed the course, you will also have access to two free masterclasses. These will focus on contemporary IPC issues and give you the opportunity to network with your peers and learn from each other.

Having all the content and the resources accessible on Moodle to work through at your own pace gives complete flexibility to those completing the programme. The workshops then allow you to build peer to peer engagement maximising learning and critical thinking.

Accreditation

This course is accredited by the RCSI Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery with 25 CPD units. The certificate will be issued by LHP Skillnet once all themes have been 100% completed and you have participated in a live virtual session.

There is no formal assessment component within the course, although there are activities and knowledge checks within some of the additional content. All learners must fully participate in the live virtual session to receive certification.

The masterclasses are a great opportunity to meet with peers working within the sector, work through a case study which develops critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, whilst led by experts within IPC. The case studies will reflect the latest challenges and give the learner the opportunity to reflect in a team working environment.
